“Are career events actually worth it?”🤔 We hear that all the time. For Shivam, the answer is a clear yes. What started as a few nerve-wracking conversations turned into real connections, multiple offers, and a meaningful internship. Now working as a Graduate Assistant in the Office of Civic and Global Engagement at Arcadia—and interning with the American Heart Association—Shivam’s story proves one thing: showing up and following through can open real doors.

❓ What career events did you attend?
Shivam: I attended the Internship & Career Fair (Feb. 19, 2025), Career Fest (Oct. 18, 2025), and Career Spot Tuesdays (employer tabling events).
❓ Who did you connect with at these events?
Shivam: I interacted with probably 20-30 people over all the the events I attended. The few notable companies were Quaker’s School at Horsham and Access Services. I was looking for a Public Health internship during the fall.
❓ What was your experience like at the career events?
Shivam: I had a good time at these events. I was supported by the career staff, but also felt independent. Even though I was nervous, all of the employers were very welcoming. Even just saying hi and having a random conversation was helpful to establish connections with the employers. Also, all of the employers have an elevator speech, which made it easy to just listen attentively half of the time.
❓ What steps did you take after the events?
Shivam: I emailed every employer that I got a contact for. I thanked them for coming to the school, and I reminded them who I am. Additionally, I talked about how their program relates to the type of internship I was looking for, and how I will be able to learn and contribute to their organization.
❓ What were the results of your follow-up?
Shivam: I had 4 interviews with various employers, I received 3 offers, and I chose American Heart Association. With the 2 organizations I rejected, my classmates were fortunately able to connect with them and get an internship with those companies.
❓What do you think has helped you prepare for your career so far?
Shivam: My major has helped me prepare for my career. My internship is public health focused, and I have been applying public health concepts I have learned throughout the years. Additionally, the employers themselves were very welcoming, which helped me to ask many questions, and prepare to work hard there.
❓ What has been the highlight of your experience so far?
Shivam: The highlights are the projects I get to work on and the team I work with. With AHA I am helping to build a blood pressure screen and refer program at various churches in Philadelphia. The research and support I am getting for it has been a great learning experience and has been a good challenge too. I am also attending many work events, which have been fun and a great networking experience as well. I feel like with my short time at this internship, I can create a meaningful impact, even if it is small.
❓ What is your advice for our fellow students on career preparation?
Shivam: I recommend that, while I is hard and nerve-racking, finding the courage to just approach any employer table is the first big step. Employers want to talk to you, so just being in this environment will help you to interact and talk with them. Also, follow-up! Reaching out to employers is important because they are all looking for people. Do not think that you are not special. Trust yourself and be yourself. That is enough. You will stand out, have unique qualities, and an employer will recognize that.
