Policy Counsel

The American Association for Justice (AAJ) works to preserve the constitutional right to trial by jury and to make sure people have a fair chance to seek justice when they are injured by the negligence or misconduct of others – even when it means taking on the most powerful corporations.

AAJ is seeking two Policy Counsel for its Public Affairs department. The Policy Counsel provides legal, legislative, and policy research in support of AAJ’s federal and state advocacy programs. Conducts analysis of assigned issues affecting individuals’ access to justice at the state and federal level.

Essential duties include:

  • Track, analyze, and assess federal and state legislation in assigned issue areas, as well as certain federal regulations.
  • Draft legislative text and advocacy materials such as one-pagers, fact sheets, talking points, and regulatory comments for assigned issues.
  • Engage with AAJ members on policy and regulatory priorities, including conducting research to evaluate civil justice implications of proposed legislation and regulations for AAJ members.
  • Advise and assist Communications staff on relevant issues.
  • Support efforts to provide information to Members of Congress and congressional staff, by preparing written materials and participating in Capitol Hill meetings and events as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Law degree with Bar admission.
  • Minimum of three-five years of relevant experience, with Capitol Hill experience preferred.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills, including the ability to produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment and exceptional attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Familiarity with federal and state legislative and regulatory processes.
  • A commitment to civil justice, and a clear understanding of AAJ’s issues and the ability to advocate for them to others.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

Salary Range: $82,000-$100,000

Benefits and Perks for Working with AAJ:

  • Hybrid work schedule, onsite Tuesday through Thursday and 100% remote work for the month of August (for most employees)
  • Comprehensive health insurance which includes medical, dental, vision, life, disability, flexible spending account (FSA), and 401K with an employer match
  • Generous paid leave (e.g., vacation, sick, personal, parental), 11 federal holidays, and paid time off between Christmas and New Years
  • Subsidized metro transit and/or parking benefits
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Company social events
  • Office conveniently located ½ block from Gallery Place/Chinatown metro station in downtown Washington, DC
