Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) has an excellent opportunity for a highly-skilled and motivated student Intern!

Internship Position: Programs Intern – Statewide Planning Section

Position Overview: The intern will play an instrumental role in supporting the four Statewide Programs: Community Water Systems (CWS), Drought, Conservation, and Rural Partnerships.

This individual may have opportunities to assist with other initiatives within the Statewide Planning section, such as the Supply and Demand reports. The Statewide Programs provide technical assistance and resources to communities, water providers, policymakers, and other stakeholders around the state.

Location Requirements: Given the nature of the work, specifically the management of physical files, the successful candidate must work on-site at the ADWR office at least two days a week. This in-person experience is also beneficial for interns, allowing them to regularly interact with and learn from seasoned staff members. (Hybrid Work Schedule)

Schedule: Hours may vary up to 40 hours per week.

All work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.

Job Duties:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the systematic organization, imaging, and management of CWS reports and files.
  • Review, file, and keep track of pertinent data relating to the CWS program.
  • Field inquiries from both customers and colleagues on topics such as water systems, drought, conservation, and compliance.
  • Prepare compliance status reports for specific systems governed by the CWS program.
  • Utilize GIS tools to assist in the evaluation of water systems and implement required edits.
  • Utilize data tools such as Excel and Power BI to assist in the management and visualization of Program data.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams and colleagues to support outreach and events, such as CWS Workshops or the annual Water Awareness Month (WAM) Festival.
  • With oversight, attend stakeholder meetings to provide support and information, particularly to rural communities.
  • With oversight, attend partner meetings including watershed groups, state agencies, and more.
  • With oversight, provide presentations on Program topics to stakeholders and fellow water professionals.
  • Develop educational content about the Statewide Programs, such as presentations, brochures, flyers, and other materials.
  • Update Programs databases as required, including extensive data entry.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned to further the goals of the department.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Candidates should have an interest in water resource management, possess strong organizational skills, have basic knowledge or willingness to learn GIS tools, and exhibit effective communication capabilities. Experience with community outreach, customer service, regulatory agencies, and/or environmental policy is helpful.

Selective Preference(s):

Candidates must be enrolled in school and pursing a degree in Hydrology, Water Resource Management, Geology, Geography, Environmental Studies, or related field.

Retirement:

Positions in this classification may participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). Please note, enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.
