Position Summary: The City of Terre Haute seeks a highly motivated university student to assist with the external communications that the city of Terre Haute provides to the community while working to make internal processes of these external communications easier. The city of Terre Haute has continuous plans of being transparent and maintaining a voice in the community that is truthful, full of information, and frequent.
The intern will work under the direction/supervision of multiple parties including the Citizen Engagement & Communication Administrator and the Mayor of Terre Haute. The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training regarding City social media, website management, current processes, and more. The intern will also develop technical and project management skills beneficial to a career in local government, social media management, communications, and related fields.
About the City’s Local Government: The City of Terre Haute is governed by a full-time mayor who is the chief administrative official of the city, and a nine-member city council. Vigo County is governed by three county commissioners and a seven-member county council whose responsibilities lie primarily in the area of fiscal affairs.
Duties will include (but are not limited to the following);
- Website updates
- Issuing press releases
- Working on updating our proclamations system
- Posting to city social media
- Creating an Instagram for the city
- The Mayor’s Monthly News Letter
- Coming up with social media campaigns
- Taking pictures for social media at events
- Drafting social media posts;
- Media Advisories
Qualifications
- Prior quantitative coursework or research experience, preferably in a discipline applied to communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field
- Experience with social media
- Ability to follow detailed and technical instructions
- Effective written communication, especially for a public audience
- Exemplary verbal communication, including speaking publicly
- Self-motivated, proactive, and flexible with careful attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple ongoing tasks
- Equity mindset and an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion
