Description
The purpose of the University Archives is to collect, describe, preserve, and make accessible the records of Appalachian State University that are determined to have historical and/or informational value from its founding to the present; regardless of format. The University Archives administers the University’s records management program and oversees the University Records Center.
This position leads all efforts in the acquisition, arrangement, description, preservation, and management of records and associated materials that document the University’s history, organization, policies, and activities.
Core Position Responsibilities
Collection Management
Oversee the University’s records management program and the University Records Center. This includes occasional travel to the off-site storage facility in Hickory, NC.
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and University procedures governing physical and electronic records.
Conduct annual appraisal of university records deciding ultimate disposition (transfer to the archives or destruction).
Work collaboratively with university records creators to identify university records with enduring value and ensure appropriate transfer to the University Records Center.
Identify and build relationships with potential donors and negotiate gifts of historical materials documenting the history of the University.
Collaborate with Digital Scholarship and Initiatives team on digital preservation planning to ensure long-term accessibility of digital assets.
Conduct arrangement and description for university archives collections when necessary.
Research Assistance, Outreach, and Public Services
Promote the collections and services of the University Archives through participation in special events, exhibits, and public relations activities such as blog and social media posts, website updates, etc.
Provide outreach to campus offices and departments as well as student organizations.
Offer specialized instruction on archives, records management, special collections, and university history in classes and in workshops.
Provide research consultations and reference assistance on records management and university archives.
Collaborate with other teams in the Libraries to develop and implement cross-team projects that meet the needs of library patrons.
Work service desk shifts in the Special Collections Research Center.

Requirements
ALA-accredited master’s degree or equivalent advanced degree
Minimum of one year of experience working in special collections, archives, and/or records management
Demonstrated knowledge of archival appraisal, arrangement, description, and ethics in archives and records management is desired in addition to one or more of the following:
Experience working with institutional records.
Experience providing instruction, workshops, and/or reference assistance with primary source material.
Experience with archival management software and technologies.
Familiarity with born-digital workflows within an archive or special collection setting.
Experience with outreach and promotion of materials and services.
Experience building relationships with internal and/or external partners with a strong commitment to public service
