POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Education Department, Museum Educators are responsible for leading dynamic and inclusive educational experiences that include tours of the historic house and grounds and art activities that inspire and engage school and youth groups (pre-k through college level). Museum Educators coordinate with security personnel to ensure the safety of the museum and its visitors.
SCOPE: Collaborate with departmental staff, volunteers and interns. Responsibilities are year-round, with a high concentration of school group visits in the Spring and Fall. School visits average two to three hours in length and most occur during the mornings from Monday to Friday. However afternoon, evening, or weekend visits are possible. Museum Educators must have a flexible schedule and be available for paid training the weeks of March 9 and March 16.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Conduct guided tours of the house and grounds with accompanying activities for student visits, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of predetermined curriculum and learning objectives relevant to the museum and its collections.
- Share information and knowledge, provide instruction, and implement interpretive plans, in a manner appropriate to the age, learning levels, and interests of the individuals.
- Identify opportunities to engage learners with diverse abilities and interests.
- Participate in museum guide meetings and training sessions, and specialized museum educator trainings.
- Ensure visitor safety, protection of collections, and respond to emergency situations.
- Work with the Education Manager to create engaging and informational activities to enhance the experience for learners of all ages.
- Help with set up and break down of activities toprepare the museum ahead of visits and restore the space(s) afterward.
- Assist in welcoming groups and managing rotations of students throughout the duration of the visit.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION
- Must have a flexible schedule and availability during the week between 9am and 5pm for field trips.
- Must be passionate about teaching young people.
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak in front of diverse groups, to listen to visitors questions and comments, and share pertinent information with other museum educators and staff.
- Experience and demonstrated ease in working with children and young adults.
- Ability to learn and share new content quickly in a specialized learning environment.
- Experience in customer service and working with the general public.
- Interest in art, history, architecture, decorative arts, poetry, nature, and storytelling.
- Successful completion of museum educator training and refresher training sessions as required.
- Ability to work collaboratively with peers contributing to a positive team environment.
- Ability to work with basic technology, Microsoft Office products and web-based scheduler.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time while giving tours.
