Optical Engineer Research Intern
Overview: We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled intern to join our team as an Optical Engineer Research Intern. The candidate will build and modify optical setups to characterize our state-of-the-art imaging technologies. The candidate must have strong knowledge and hands-on experience in optical design, optical testing, microscopy, building optical setups, and lens testing. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with a dynamic team on a cutting-edge project.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- Ability to build and test optical setups, including building microscopy systems
- Proficiency in optical design principles
- Experience with optical testing techniques
- Experience with characterization of the lenses
- Skills in microscopy, such as fluorescence imaging and confocal imaging techniques
- Experience with Optical Imaging
Desirable Knowledge and Experience:
- Background in optical designs
- Familiarity with lens design
- Experience with optical design software such as TracePro, OSLO, ZEMAX,
- Familiarity with fluorescence imaging and confocal imaging techniques
- Familiarity with image processing modules in Python.
Qualifications:
- Preferred Majors: MS or PhD student in optical engineering, physics, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or any related field.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Candidates must meet at least one of the following:
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD at a Maryland university with a GPA of>2.5.
- Graduated from a Maryland university with a BS, MS, or PhD in <12 months.
Duration:
- Duration: This internship can span 1-2 semesters.
- Hours: 220 hours per semester.
- Location: On-site (Rockville, MD)
- Attendance: Required on fixed days of the week.

- There is a high potential for a well-performing intern to become a full-time employee at the end of the internship term.
