Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Law Clerk to join our team for the summer. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in criminal defense, having completed coursework in criminal procedure and/or gained practical experience in a criminal defense attorney’s office or the public defender’s office. This role is ideal for a law student (1L or 2L)
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Research and Motion Writing: Conduct thorough research on criminal law and procedure, case law, statutes, and legal precedents. Prepare detailed memoranda summarizing findings and recommendations.
- Case Preparation: Assist attorneys with preparing case files, drafting legal documents, and organizing evidence. Support case strategy development and client preparation.
- Document Management: Scan, file, and manage legal documents and correspondence. Ensure all records are accurate, up-to-date, and organized in a secure manner.
- Correspondence: Review, draft, and manage correspondence with clients, courts, and other legal professionals. Assist in preparing legal briefs, motions, and other legal documents.
- Client Interaction: Communicate with clients to gather information and schedule appointments. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Administrative Support: Provide general administrative support including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and performing other office tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
- Completion of coursework in Criminal Procedure or equivalent legal studies. Experience in a criminal defense attorney’s office or public defender’s office is preferred.
- Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and legal research databases (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
- Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and integrity.
- Strong communication skills and a professional demeanor.
- Must be located in or near the Chicagoland area.
