position summary

Merjent, Inc. (Merjent) has an immediate need for archaeological field technicians to provide technical support to professional archaeologists. Archaeological technicians will utilize a basic understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, and evaluating cultural resource sites.

Archaeological field technicians will be hired into 1 of 3 levels (1, 2, or 3), based on the experience and qualifications of successful candidates. If hired as a level 1 or 2, there are opportunities to advance to higher levels.

These are seasonal positions that will begin in September 2025. The pay rate for these positions starts at $22.00 to $26.00 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. These are non-exempt positions and will receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a week.

responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Field Lead for Phase I survey, Field Technicians are responsible for performing common tasks associated with archaeological investigations and surveys within the archaeological project area.

Archaeological Field Technician 1 (0-2 years of experience):

Perform pedestrian walkover survey, controlled surface survey, and shovel testing.

Complete field-related paperwork including but not limited to recordation of excavated shovel tests, plan view and profile drawing, site/feature maps, and/or artifact inventories.

Archaeological Field Technician 2 & 3 (2-5 years of experience):

Perform pedestrian walkover survey, controlled surface survey, and shovel testing.

Complete field-related paperwork including but not limited to recordation of excavated shovel tests, plan view and profile drawing, site/feature maps and/or artifact inventories.

Model proper field procedures for entry level technicians and assist with in-field artifact processing.

Maintain field equipment and supplies.

qualifications and experience

Bachelor’s degree in cultural resource management, archaeology, or anthropology.

Completion of an Archaeological Field School and 1 year of fieldwork experience.

Ability to work well under pressure and adapt to changing workloads.

Ability to conduct field work for 10+ hours per day, sometimes in adverse conditions (outdoor weather conditions, steep terrain, etc.).

Ability to work weekends, across multiple weeks, in or out of state, and regularly work more than 40 hours per week.

Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Ability to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.

Mus be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
