LOCATION: Galax, VA

JOB SUMMARY:

To provide therapeutic day treatment for youth experiencing difficulties in the school setting due to emotional/behavioral symptoms.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Oversee entire consumer caseload at the designated school site.
  2. Identify clinical needs and goals for students transitioning into and out of the program.
  3. Integrate input from teachers and counselors in order to facilitate student skill development so that they are able to cooperate and comply with pre-set standards regarding behavior and coping strategies.
  4. Conduct consumers’ intake interviews and treatment/recreational planning by identifying problems, assessing strengths, establishing treatment goals/objectives, monitoring progress, and modifying treatment plans as needed.
  5. Establish and maintain effective and reliable therapeutic relationships with students and create, within each treatment, an environment that will be helpful to them by: intervening with students in crisis situations, reinforcing positive behaviors, developing and implementing goals and objectives for groups of students, providing for the physical and emotional safety of students, teaching students to enjoy/respect themselves as well as other people and the environment, modeling appropriate attitudes and behaviors, setting a therapeutic tone for unstructured time, and implementing identified intervention strategies.
  6. Maintain a reliable therapeutic relationship with consumers’ parents, helping them to understand their child’s behaviors and assist them with emergencies.
  7. Actively participate in meetings with school personnel, mental health professionals, and other professionals who may act as members of the treatment team. This may be done by written correspondence and/or staffing.
  8. Develop and practice activities and trainings designed to enhance social and interpersonal skills (including problem-solving, anger management, impulse control, peer relations, community responsibility, etc.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse disorders.
  • Knowledge of treatment modalities and application.
  • Knowledge of human growth and development.
  • Knowledge of principles of management and supervision.
  • Skills in written and oral communication.
  • Skills in working effectively with young people.
  • Skills in recording, interviewing, assessing, decision-making, and treatment planning.
  • Public relations skills.
  • Time management and organizational skills.

Minimum Requirements

Level 12– Bachelors degree in the Human Service field and one year of experience in the clinical and/or school/education setting preferred.

Level 13– Master’s degree in the Human Service field required and one year of experience in school/education setting preferred.

Must meet Board of Health Professions registration requirements for QMHP (A or C or A-Trainee or C-Trainee).
