Students will use several research tools, including email and phone, to determine the position of
PA elected officials and other community leaders on abolishing the death penalty. Examples:
● Online search for public statements, legislation sponsored or cosponsored, membership
in particular organizations, background, etc.
● Identify legislative priorities for each elected
● Using the elected contact form and/or emailing and/or making phone calls to
determine the position of each elected on the death penalty and broader criminal legal
reform
● Creating pdfs of materials in local, state, and national media
● Tabulating this coverage
●
● Identifying trends and frequency by media in different parts of the state
Writing about capital punishment targeted for specific audiences, e.g., victims’ families; law
enforcement; pro-life; small government; and fiscal conservatives.
Contacting educational organizations to gauge their interest in co-hosting events
Requirements:
● Reliability
● Tenacity
● Ability to work individually and as a member of a team
● Flexibility
● Ability to differentiate between Googling and conducting research
● Minimum of five hours per week
● Reliable, high-speed internet and a computer; cell phones are not acceptable
