Under direction of the Rehabilitative Services Manager the Speech Language Pathologist II, provides evaluations, screenings, and evidence-based treatment to patients (infants through adults), related to speech, language, learning, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing/feeding, fluency disorders, and overall communication ability. This position Counsels’ client regarding test results and recommends appropriate steps for treatment. Plan, direct, or conduct rehabilitative treatment programs to Instruct and educate residents, families, and caregivers in appropriate diet recommendations and modifications for safe swallowing techniques and refers patient for further medical or educational evaluation as appropriate. Maintain patient records in an accurate and timely manner. Serves as liaison with other Health Department or County programs in need of speech services; Lead or participate in special therapeutic programs or group therapy programs as set up by the speech and hearing department. Participates in community outreach activities (i.e.: school screenings, outreach awareness events) Comply with all regulatory requirements.
Note: This is a non-merit G-Status temporary positions. Cannot exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Appointee is not eligible for benefits and does not earn paid leave or holiday pay.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of speech language pathology;
- Knowledge of, and the ability to administer, various types of speech language programs;
- Knowledge of physical and psychological disabilities affecting speech, language, cognitive function and/or social implications and of their social implications;
- Skill in administering diagnostic tests and various types of speech language programs;
- Skill in communicating orally with clients and their families;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, family members and professional colleagues;
- Ability to evaluate existing programs and develop new ones;
- Ability to work independently.
Minimum Employment Standards:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master’s degree in speech pathology;
Plus one year of experience in speech pathology.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Certification in speech pathology by the American Speech and Hearing Association;
Must have a license in speech language pathology issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Contingent upon area of assignment, some positions within this class will require a National Provider Identifier. Virginia licensure and ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence required. Certification by Virginia as an Early Intervention Professional will need to be completed prior to start of work.
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check, sanctions screening and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Preferred Qualifications
Two or more years of pediatric and adult assessment and treatment experience (infants, children, adolescents, adults). Ability to work independently and as a team member. Strong critical thinking skills, the ability to exercise sound judgment; and the capacity to manage multiple time-critical tasks. Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills. Possesses Excellent verbal and written communications skills and abilities; demonstrate interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population and ability to take initiative and be proactive in addressing challenges. Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.
Physical Requirements
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), and kneeling, reaching, bending, climbing stairs; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer; ability to drive a motor vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Employee may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Generally, works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
